INL investigating fire in laboratory facility

Idaho National Laboratory has formed a team to determine the cause of a small fire that occurred Tuesday in a laboratory at a facility at INL. The investigation team will include experts from several organizations. No time has been set for completing the investigation and preparing a report.

The technician injured received minor burns and was treated at the INL desert Site medical facility and released.

The technician was putting red phosphorous powder into a steel container when the material flashed and caused the fire. The red phosphorous was to be used to test equipment designed to detect concealed explosives.

The building in which the fire occurred contains a number of laboratories. The laboratory where the incident occurred remains closed. Employees who work at the building returned to work today.
