FOLLOW-UP NEWS RELEASE FOR INL EMERGENCY

Favorable weather slows spread of wildland fire, August 17

Rain and increased humidity Friday evening have slowed the progression of a wildland fire that continues to burn near the East Butte off Highway 20. The Bureau of Land Management has estimated the fire is 30-percent contained.

Fire crews will remain at the scene through the night. Firefighters from the Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory, BLM, Idaho Falls, Bingham County and Shelley responded to the fire, which burned on and off the INL.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a "red flag" warning is in effect until 11 p.m. Friday. NOAA reported more than 8,000 lightning strikes in eastern Idaho Friday afternoon as severe thunderstorms and rain showers moved across southeastern Idaho.

The INL's emergency Joint Information Center and Emergency Operations Center are standing down and will reactivate if necessary.

Media can call Teri Ehresman at (208) 520-6252 for INL-related fire updates.
