Materials & Fuels Complex fire extinguished, involved no radiological risk

The emergency response to an INL fire was terminated at 5:10 p.m. No radiological materials were affected by the fire and there is no threat to employees or the public.

Here is new confirmed information:

* Shortly before 2 p.m., smoke was reported at a building at the Materials & Fuels Complex.
* The fire was confined to the surface of the building’s roof. No fire entered the building. The burned area was confined to 4 square feet of the exterior roof.
* Around 4:30 p.m. the fire was declared extinguished.
* No radiological material was affected or involved in the fire. There was no radiological release.
* The fire presents no threat to public or employee health or safety.
* Nearly 100 employees were evacuated from the building.
* Six subcontractors were supporting the welding project when the fire occurred.

Information previously reported:
* The fire is believed to have occurred while workers were welding on the roof of the building.
* No injuries have been reported, and employees – although delayed – will be traveling home as usual.

Department of Energy's Emergency Operations Center reports the fire at the INL site is out

INL fire officials report the fire on the roof of a building at the Materials and Fuels Complex at the Idaho Site is out. The fire is believed to have occurred while workers were welding on the roof of the building. There is no risk to the public or employees. No injuries have been reported, and employees – although delayed – will be traveling home as usual.

Department of Energy's Emergency Operations Center is gathering information about a reported incident at the Idaho Site

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has been activated and is gathering information about a reported fire on the roof of a building at the Materials and Fuels Complex at the Idaho Site. Officials report that at this time there is no visible smoke or flames. The building has been evacuated and all employees are safe. No injuries have been reported.

When events such as this are reported, DOE activates its EOC as a standard practice to gather information and coordinate site-wide incident responders, as needed.  This news release is being issued to alert you of the reported incident and the EOC activation. Based on the information obtained so far, there is no risk to the public.

INL personnel are responding to investigate the incident; and state, county and tribal officials are being notified. News release updates will be issued when more information is available. Additional details on the nature of the incident and a preliminary impact assessment will be provided to the media and the public as soon as they are available and confirmed.
