INL Scholastic Tournament state championship begins today

Brainy students representing 28 Idaho high schools are converging in Boise for the Idaho National Laboratory Scholastic Tournament state championship. The winners will go to the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl April 29 in Washington, D.C.

But first, student teams will match wits March 16-17. Tuesday's competition will be at the Boise Centre on the Grove, beginning around 1:30 p.m. Former NASA astronaut and McCall-Donnelly elementary school teacher Barbara Morgan will give the keynote address at Tuesday's luncheon.

The final championship rounds will be on Wednesday in KIVI-TV’s Nampa studio, where one team from each division will be crowned. KIVI will videotape these final three matches, and Idaho Public Television will broadcast them on Saturday, March 27.

The following high schools are participating in the state championship. Class A: Centennial (Meridian), Idaho Falls, Treasure Valley Math and Science, Lakeland (Rathdrum), Post Falls, Skyline (Idaho Falls), Pocatello, Timberline (Boise). Class B: American Falls, Timberlake (Spirit Lake), Ririe, Filer, Cole Valley Christian (Boise), Teton (Driggs), Coeur d’Alene Charter, New Plymouth. Class C: Butte County (Arco), Kendrick, Meadows Valley (New Meadows), Prairie (Cottonwood), Riverstone International (Boise), Victory Charter (Nampa), Logos (Moscow), Challis, Idaho Arts Charter (Boise), Council, Clearwater Valley (Kooskia), Rockland.

For two decades, INL has sponsored the state tournament, which is the largest of the regional Science Bowl contests held every year across the U.S. and Virgin Islands. This year, 800 students representing 73 Idaho high schools participated in regional competitions that took place over the past five weeks. INL Scholastic Tournament receives financial support from Micron Foundation, Westmark Credit Union and Idaho Power.
