INL employee named Safe Driver of Year for Mountain Region
IDAHO FALLS – The National Safety Council chose an Idaho National Laboratory bus driver as Safe Driver of the Year for the eight-state Mountain Region. Four other INL bus drivers earned awards of honor in the NSC competition as well.
Grover Staub will represent the region this fall in competing for the 2009 Joseph M. Kaplan Safe Driver of the Year Award. To earn that right, Staub competed successfully against drivers from throughout Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.
It helped that in his 32 years at INL, he has accumulated 1.65 million accident-free miles of professional driving. Staub currently drives an INL route from Blackfoot – where he resides – to the INL Site and back.
"INL bus drivers have a truly world-class safe driving record," said Debby Tate, who oversees bus operations as director of R&D Support Services at the laboratory. "Grover Staub has earned this honor through many years and more than one million miles of accident-free professional driving. He is an outstanding part of a truly outstanding INL bus driving team. INL congratulates him on this achievement."
INL drivers Phyllis Delgado, Dennis Ellis, Bill Quinn and Joel P. Wright were each recognized for having at least 15 years and 250,000 miles of safe professional driving.
The national award represents the "best of the best" for safe driving among professional drivers. In October, Staub will compete against seven other drivers from across the nation for that award.
INL is one of the DOE's 10 multi-program national laboratories. The laboratory performs work in each of the strategic goal areas of DOE: energy, national security, science and environment. INL is the nation's leading center for nuclear energy research and development. Day-to-day management and operation of the laboratory is the responsibility of Battelle Energy Alliance.
