INL's internship program ranked among best in nation.

IDAHO FALLS – Idaho National Laboratory's internship program has been named one of the top internships by a national ranking company and will be included in the 2010 edition of the Vault Guide to Top Internships.

Vault publishes the U.S. internship guide each year. Companies are rated only on the opportunities they provide interns, the salaries and perks they offer and what Vault calls "'resume radiance' (the potential for impressing future employers with a 'big name' on your resume)."

"The internships we highlight are the best around when it comes to challenging work and projects, pay and perks, and launching a career," said Vault Senior Editor Carolyn Wise. "If students nab a spot in one of the internship programs prestigious enough to be chosen for the Vault Guide to Top Internships, they can be confident that they will have a great experience that will prepare them for their career."

This is the first time INL's program will be listed in the annual guide.

Erin Hanson, an INL internship coordinator, said it is a significant achievement because Vault chooses which programs to include -- laboratories and companies can’t buy a page in the guide.

"When I called them last year to see if they could include our program, they told me 'You don't select us, we select you,'" she said.

Nearly 200 interns will work at INL this summer, making it the largest science and engineering internship program in the state. INL interns hail from universities across the state and nation and study and work alongside some of the most eminent researchers in their fields.

The goal is to give students "real world" experience and to introduce them to the Idaho National Laboratory as a potential employer, especially in key science areas.

"We are thrilled by this announcement," said Melinda Hamilton, INL's director of education programs. "We are constantly striving to improve our internship offerings and to be recognized in this manner is a great affirmation to us that we’re on the right track."
