INL awards construction contract for new office building at Site

IDAHO FALLS -- The U.S. Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory has awarded a contract to C&H Construction Group to build a new Common Support Building (CSB) at the Advanced Test Reactor Complex on the desert Site.

The 16,400-square-foot CSB costs approximately $4 million. Construction will begin in June and the building's 80 occupants will move into the facility in September 2009. Intended primarily as an office building, it will also house one laboratory supporting work of the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility. CSB occupants are coming from buildings that will be demolished at the Site as well as a modular office building at the ATR Complex. Employees from Nuclear Programs, Operations and Facility and Site Services will move into the CSB.

The CSB marks the second new building construction contract announced this year by INL. Last February, a contract was awarded for a new radiochemistry laboratory at the Materials and Fuels Complex.

"Awarding this second construction contract continues to demonstrate the U.S. Department of Energy's and INL's commitment to upgrading facilities to meet our ongoing missions. These new buildings are an important element in creating the type of environment expected by scientists and engineers working at a preeminent national laboratory," said Robert Miklos, INL director of Project Management.

Construction will use Leadership in Energy and Environmental Designs (LEED) Green Building Rating System elements developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. The CSB will have such features as optimum use of natural lighting, recyclable materials, and energy efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment to meet federal sustainable building criteria.
