Fleet Management

The remoteness of the Site and great distances between facilities presents significant transportation needs. A mass transit system was established in 1953 and today uses over 84 buses to regularly transport INL employees to and from the Site.

The INL vehicle fleet is comprised of light-duty vehicles fueled by gasoline and ethanol. Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles include over-the-road buses and a complex assortment of trucks and equipment fueled by diesel and biodiesel. Typically, 9.5 million miles are driven annually and over 50,000 hours are logged on heavy equipment. INL has a significant opportunity to help the DOE reduce its use of petroleum based fuels.

INL is expected to meet or exceed the requirements of newly finalized newly finalized DOE Order 436.1, "Departmental Sustainability" (dated 5/2/11) by reducing our petroleum fuel usage by 2 percent each year and increasing its use of alternative fuels by 10 percent each year, both as compared to a base year of FY 2005. That means a 20 percent reduction in petroleum fuels by FY 2015 and a 100 percent increase in the use of alternative fuels during the same time period. As the goal is for total fuel usages, the best way to decrease the use of petroleum fuel is to increase the use of alternative fuels.

During FY 2009, INL made significant progress in these two goal areas by providing both E85 and biodiesel for most site locations. Alternative fuels are now available in over 45 percent of the INL’s fuel tank capacity, and the light-duty fleet is being rapidly replaced with factory flex-fuel vehicles. As of the end of FY 2009, INL had decreased petroleum fuel use by 25 percent and increased alternative fuel usage by 22 percent. 

INL has made great progress, but maintaining this progress is entirely up to INL employees. Employees can assist with this important national effort by:

  • Using the bus system whenever possible, including the shuttle buses. Bus & Shuttle Schedules
  • Not using government vehicles to travel to and from the Site unless absolutely necessary and then using the most fuel-efficient vehicle available.
  • Using E85 whenever possible in flex-fuel vehicles even if it is a little less convenient.
  • Considering teleconferencing and videoconferencing where they are available rather than driving to a meeting.
  • Taking advantage of increasing Park and Ride opportunities as they are established to reduce the amount of fuel used in the buses.
