Risk Evaluation of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials
This study has determined the rate at which radon gas is released from production pipe scale and soils contaminated with naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) at petroleum production facilities and pipe storage yards. Six facilities from three major petroleum-producing regions were sampled.
The objective was to develop reasonable values for radon release from pipe scale and soils. We expected that data from uranium mill tailings were overly conservative when applied to the petroleum industry. The work was in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute and the U.S. Geological Society.
