He officially assumed the role in February 2014. Rory has a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Colorado State University and master's and doctorate degrees in inorganic chemistry from Northwestern University. He has been a manager and staff member in INL's Nuclear Fuels and Materials Division for more than 18 years. Rory has a long history and understanding of material properties, including fuel fabrication and characterization, reactor-based testing and post-irradiation examination.
In this video, he talks about what a user facility is, explains how ATR NSUF provides external users access to unique nuclear research capabilities at INL and 11 partner facilities throughout the U.S., and how his background will play into his new position as scientific director. He also explains his role as scientific director, his short- and long-term goals for ATR NSUF, and what made him want to go into science. Finally, Rory shares advice for young students and scientists, plus a few things about himself that many people would be surprised to know.
