DOE-NE Director of Nuclear Innovative Research

Michael Worley is the director for Nuclear Innovative Research for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy. His responsibilities include planning and executing DOE’s Nuclear Energy University Programs (NEUP), National Scientific User Facility program (NSUF), Nuclear Energy Enabling Technologies Crosscutting technology development (NEET), Nuclear Energy Modeling & Simulation (NEAMS), Research Reactor Infrastructure (RRI), and SBIR/STTR programs. Prior to this assignment, Worley was the director for laboratory facilities management, with responsibility for the Idaho facilities management and safeguards and security programs at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Worley joined the Office of Nuclear Energy in 2003.

DOE NEUP Team Lead

Kenny Osborne is the NEUP Team Lead for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy. His responsibilities include planning and executing DOE’s Nuclear Energy University Programs (NEUP), Integrated University Program (IUP), and SBIR/STTR programs. Prior to his assignment, Osborne worked as the DOE-ID Program Manager for NEUP.

NEUP Integration Office Director

Dr. John Gilligan is the primary liaison for NEUP with universities, national laboratories, and industry and works with the NEUP Executive Committee and other organizations. He is responsible for general policies and procedures for the NEUP program. Dr. Gilligan is also a faculty member at North Carolina State University and is the author of over 110 peer reviewed publications. He has been the editor of the Nuclear Science and Engineering Education Sourcebook since 1986 and has served as University Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies at NC State.

NEUP Integration Office Program Manager

Greg Bala handles the day-to-day operations of the Integration Office and works closely with the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy to administer NEUP. Prior to joining NEUP, Greg was responsible for the management and integration of research and operation activities for multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary research teams in physical, chemical and biological sciences at the Idaho National Laboratory. He has a Masters degree in microbiology from Miami University, Ohio.

NEUP Integration Office Deputy Program Manager

Val Seeley is the NEUP Integration Office Deputy Program Manager and acts as NEUP's project manager. She assists with day-to-day operations of the Integration Office. Val also manages the financial operations of the office which include the administration of contracts and scheduling.

NEUP Integration Office Outreach Coordinator and Infrastructure Lead

Drew Thomas is the NEUP outreach coordinator. He is responsible for communications for the program, including writing press releases, maintaining the NEUP Website, social media, corresponding with researchers, and coordinating outreach activities. He also leads NEUP's Infrastructure grant processes including university reactor upgrades and general scientific infrastructure support.

NEUP Student Educational Support Lead

Jenna Payne is the Student Educational Support lead. She leads NEUP's Scholarship and Fellowship grant processes including student interactions, project tracking, and acceptance package preparations.

NEUP Reviewer Coordinator

Ryan Jensen is the NEUP reviewer coordinator and manages review assignments from NE’s reviewer database. Ryan is the primary point of contact for reviewers and coordinates review and panel assignments for all NEUP solicitations. Ryan also assists with contract administration and other financial operations of the office.

NEUP Contracts Lead

Suzanne Nelson is the NEUP contracts and quarterly reports point of contact. She is responsible for the administration of 180 R&D and IRP subcontracts and serves as a liaison between the university researchers and contracts staff. Her responsibilities include invoice approval, foreign travel facilitation, quarterly reporting, and ensuring contract requirements are completed with final report close-out tasks.

Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Lead

Brian Morishita leads the coordination of peer reviews as part of the DOE Office of Science's SBIR/STTR program. He is the main contact for all review assignments associated with SBIR/STTR. Brian also maintains researcher and reviewer demographic information for the DOE-NE peer review database.
