Materials Characterization

Method Development

Fuel CompactNew innovations in nuclear materials and technology require new methods of analysis. The NMCD can develop techniques and technology to work with new, non-traditional challenges. Some recent developments at the analytical lab include work on characterizing sealed sources and testing the performance of fuel compacts for the advanced gas reactor fuel development and qualification programs (AGR). With collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, leach-burn-leach technique was used to determine uranium release due to fuel compact failure.
