Nuclear Fuel Recycling

Nuclear fuel recycling technologies could help make use of the valuable energy resource residing inside used fuel rods and minimize the final volume of nuclear waste.  To retrieve the useful resources from used fuel, materials that jump-start the chain reaction must be separated from the components that interfere with fission.  Exploring novel extraction systems to complete the difficult spearation of the minor actinides from the fission product lanthanides in a more simplistic manner compared to current methodologies is the goal of this LDRD project.  This work is contributing to design of an advanced fuel cycle that is resistant to nuclear proliferation.
