INL Seismic Monitoring Capabilities and Research

Earthquake data collected by the INL Seismic Monitoring Program provide information for site operations and support research. For site operations, the INL Seismic Monitoring Program provides the following:


  • Immediate notification of magnitude, location, and levels of ground shaking (accelerations) to INL operations in the event of a large earthquake

  • An early warning system for potential future basalt volcanism within the Snake River Plain

  • Earthquake data for seismic hazards assessments and development of INL seismic design criteria

  • Validation of INL seismic design criteria in the event of a nearby moderate to large magnitude earthquake

  • Quarterly summaries and an annual report on earthquake activity.

INL Seismic Monitoring personnel are involved in investigations and research associated with the following:


  • Continued assessment of historical seismicity and characterization of earthquake sources in the Snake River Plain and surrounding Basin and Range

  • Characterization of earthquake attenuation properties of the Snake River Plain subsurface

  • Investigations of magmatic processes within the Snake River Plain

  • Contemporary crustal deformation of the Snake River Plain and Basin and Range Province from GPS data

  • Development of site-specific seismic design criteria for facilities and site-response on shallow soil sites at INL.
