INL Science Focus Area Project

Program Overview

INL SFA program is directed at developing knowledge that can be used for the remediation of subsurface metal contaminants through stimulation of mineral precipitation formation.


Strategy: The INL SFA program is built upon a framework of five experimental campaigns. Each campaign is characterized by a different reactant mixing geometry, and represents a reactant delivery strategy that could be used in the field. They are:

   In situ reactant generation: One or more reactants are generated in situ from precursor compounds
 Pre-mix: All required reactants are mixed immediately prior to injection  
   Sequential injection: Separate solutions containing reaction components are injected at the same point, at separate times
 Parallel injection: Separate reactant solutions are injected at different locations simultaneously, and mixing occurs at the interface of the two parallel solutions  
Gas phase injection: A gaseous but water-soluble reactant is injected into unsaturated media overlying a saturated zone


Structure: Each experiment campaign relies on contributions from four integrated Research Elements (RE). They are:

1) Transport/Precipitation Coupling in Porous Media (flow cell experiments),

2) Basic Processes and Parameters (characterization of fundamental processes),

3) Model Application, Validation, and Improvement (pre- and post-experimental simulations), and

4) Sensing Methods (using electrical and electromagnetic geophysical methods).
