Idaho National Laboratory principal investigators have developed reliable and robust methods to detect biological threat agents, including Brucella species. Using molecular methods, unique DNA signatures are being identified that distinguish individual species and isolates from one another, supporting both detection and forensic capabilities.

In addition, researchers have developed "antibody profiling" methods based on unique antibodies present in body fluids, such as blood, semen, tears, saliva or perspiration. A unique protein banding pattern resulting from an individual's assay provides a rapid and inexpensive alternative to commonly used DNA analysis methods. Validation of the "antibody profiling" technique will allow for its commercialization and use in forensics and national security applications.
