Advanced Process & Decision Systems

With a growing emphasis on providing more secure and environmentally friendly energy alternatives, it is essential to test and study new ways of using fossil fuels to meet those standards.

The Advanced Process & Decision Systems department has been heavily involved with evaluating fossil fuel alternatives such as liquefied natural gas, coal and oil shale gasification, tar and oil sands gasification, and coal-bed and coal mine methane recovery.

Researchers work closely with the industry leaders to ensure viable energy developments by thoroughly modeling and testing a variety of systems developed by industry. These tests validate in-house models built to evaluate and optimize gasification and gasifier systems.

Researchers also design bench-scale experiments that involve small versions of working systems, and they perform dynamic testing of systems - and eventually operate pilot plants in tandem with private industry.
